I don’t know what to major in!
Among the many benefits of attending a liberal arts institution is the flexibility and variety the curriculum offers. The Strong Interest Inventory is an assessment that is offered through the Career Center and brings to the surface career interests and possible majors linked to careers. The Career Center also offers the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator that highlights a student’s preferences and how those might translate into the workplace. To determine if an assessment is the next step for you, meet with a Career Counselor today or participate in the “Discover Your Code” event in January!
I know my major, now what?
One of the most helpful resources is faculty in your major. They often keep in touch with alums and know what past students are doing with the degree. We also encourage students to contact alums from the CARD System, a database with over 700 SJFC graduates that would like to assist you with your career inquiries. You also can visit what can I do with a major in… series for a listing of possible career pathways linked to various majors.
What is my career timeline? How do I make one?
Conducting a targeted job search takes focus, time and a plan. For an entry-level position, plan 3-6 months of job search. Meet with a Career Counselor to discuss your specific situation and how to create a realistic timeline for your career area.
I have two great job offers, how do I choose?
When it rains, it pours – and now you have some decisions to make. Meet with a Career Counselor to discuss various factors to your decision, including your values, your personal monetary needs and what you consider most important. Above all – NEVER accept a position and then accept another, thus reneging on the first.
I didn’t get the job I wanted, what do I do now?
Career Counselors are happy to meet with you to create your next steps and to show you additional resources that can facilitate further job and internship exploration, as well as the CARD System networking database. Contact the Career Center at 385-8050 to make an appointment.
