Job & Internship Search Techniques spacer Career Services

To make the most of this information, schedule an appointment (385-8050) with a Career Counselor to specifically discuss your job and internship search strategies and questions.

How do I make a resume and/or cover letter?

Utilize the sample resumes to create a first draft or to update an existing draft. Do NOT use a Microsoft Word template to get started! Throughout the academic year, the Career Center has resume editing sessions to review updated resumes. Call the Career Center, 385-8050, to get into a session.

How do I find a job or internship?

First and foremost, make sure your resume is ready (see above).  Next, utilize these three strategies concurrently: Proactive job search, reactive job search and networking.  Proactive job search involves identifying a company or field in which you would like to work, finding a person within that organization to whom you can send your resume to or conduct an informational interview with. The reactive job search is responding to posted positions that you may find in the JobZone, using our online resources, other websites and within the newspaper.  Finally, networking is often one of the most successful job search technique.

Please see All About Internships for further details

Help – I have an interview…what do I do?

Congratulations on your upcoming interview!  There are two best methods to help you prepare: (1) do your research on the company, and (2) participate in a mock interview.  To research the company, review the company website and any literature they produce.  Review their “in the news” section or “press releases” on their website to obtain current and exciting information they have published to the public.  Learn all you can about the organization including the position you are applying for and products and services the organization provides.  Our interviewing tips pamphlet is a detailed publication that provides you with further interview tips as well as sample interview questions. To practice answering interview questions, Career Counselors are happy to provide mock interviews.  We also encourage all students to participate in a campus mock interview night every spring semester.  To schedule an individual mock interview, contact the Career Center (385-8050).

Informational Interviewing

The informational interview focuses on you asking someone else about what their job entails.  View our informational interviewing tips to get started.

Who is coming to campus and when?

Many recruiters come to our campus to meet and interview our students.  Often, employers will send us a position description that we advertise to students via email (SJFC email accounts only) and they collect resumes and schedule candidates of interest.  To see a listing of on campus recruiting events, visit our on campus recruiters page. Be sure to plan for the annual Career and Internship Fair and other recurring events that can be found on our calendar of events page.
