Title: College Sales Representative - Rochester, NY
Description: W.W. Norton is seeking an individual for the position of College Publishing Sales Representative for Rochester, New York with travel throughout Buffalo, Syracuse, and Ithaca. This position involves meeting with college/university instructors with the aim of promoting Norton textbooks and emedia materials for possible course use. Though many representatives desire to stay in the sales field for the long term, this position can lead to other careers in marketing, editorial, or management within Norton’s college division. Employees in this position will develop presentation, public speaking, problem solving, and event-planning skills.
The Company: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. is the largest independent publisher in North America wholly owned and operated by its employees. Founded in 1923, Norton has a distinguished history in academic, trade (i.e. popular), and professional publishing. Our college division is best known for its internationally acclaimed anthologies which include The Norton Anthology of English Literature, The Norton Shakespeare, and The Norton Anthology of African American Literature. However, our success is not limited to the field of literary studies; we also have rich, well-respected lists in history, psychology, political science, economics, and music. In recent years, Norton has launched important new titles in chemistry, rhetoric/composition, astronomy, geology, philosophy, biology, anthropology, and sociology, and we expect to strengthen our presence in the liberal arts in the future.
On the trade side, our accomplishments during the past decade have met with critical recognition. Among the numerous awards accorded to Norton titles were two Pulitzer Prizes (Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond and Embracing Defeat, John Dower), Britain’s highest honor, The Whitbread Prize (Seamus Heaney’s verse translation of Beowulf), and National Book Awards in fiction (Ship Fever, Andrea Barrett), non-fiction (Embracing Defeat, John Dower; Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond) and poetry (Garbage, A. R. Ammons; Passing Through, Stanley Kunitz; Vice, Ai). But our trade publishing accomplishments extend to sales as well as honors, as best-sellers such as Sebastian Junger’s The Perfect Storm and Michael Lewis’ Moneyball attest.rnrnNorton’s employee-owned status and relatively modest size foster a strong corporate identity and intimate, collegial atmosphere that is increasingly distinctive in the merger-ridden publishing industry. An unusually tight relationship between our trade and college divisions enables us to develop a wide array of projects with appeal to both academic and popular audiences.
Requirements: We look for graduates with a rich liberal arts background. Concentration in a particular field of study is not as important as breadth of experience, a firm grasp of the relationships between various disciplines and genuine curiosity about the many fields in which we publish. Most of our employees majored in the social sciences or humanities, but students in the natural sciences with broad interests are encouraged to apply. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required. Independence, self-motivation, intellectual curiosity, strong writing skills, and physical stamina are essential qualities for this position. Significant travel experience, familiarity with standard computer applications (e.g. PPT, Excel, Outlook), and a genuine interest in the publishing industry are definite assets.
Location: Rochester, NY with travel throughout Western NY
