Adelie Penguins reside on the continent of Antarctica. Adelies are the smalls of the penguins that live in Antarctica. They are around 28 inches tall and tend to weigh between 8-9 pounds. Adelie penguins make their nests and breed on rocky, ice free beaches. Their nests are made of pebbles. Adelies, for the most part lay 2 eggs and the male penguins takes the job of keeping the egg warm. The male usually does this by holding the eggs on the top of his feet or by laying on the eggs. After 3 weeks the mother penguin returns to help care for the chicks. Instead of feeding their chicks the parents make the chicks chase them for food. This teaches the chicks how to fend for themselves. However, in the end only one chick will survive. Adelie chicks grow the fastest of all the penguin chicks. Adelie Penguins do not drink water, they eat snow and they have a special gland in their nose to takes the salt out of the ocean water that they swallow when they are swimming and eating fish. Adelies are the most humorous penguins. You will very often see them sledding down hills on their white bellies. Adelie penguins tend to live within large colonies of ten thousands. Currently there are over 2.5 million Adelies in Antarctica.
