African penguins are also known as Jackass penguins. They are sometimes called this because they quite often make a very loud braying noise. African penguins are about 27 inches tall and weigh between 7-11 pounds. The African Penguin is a protected species, however the African Penguin is continually in danger of oil spills. The African Penguin resides on the coast of South Africa. They build their nests far away from other penguins. Normally, their nests are built under bushes or on sandy beaches. For the most part the mother penguin lays 2 eggs. then, the father penguin will equally share the task of keeping the eggs warm. The eggs will take approximately 38-41 days to hatch and if food is not scarce both chicks will survive. The chicks will need to be kept warm and protected for about 40 days. The chicks will then get their adult feathers around 70-100 days in which they would now go out on their own.
