All About King Penguins

The King Penguin is the second largest penguin. It is often confused with the Emperor Penguin. The King Penguin measures around 33-36 inches tall and weigh around 37-35 pounds. The King lives on islands far north of the Antarctic continent where the Emperor lives. The King female will almost always lay one egg. The male has the responsibility of caring for the egg. At this point the female penguin will go to sea. The male will only go without food for one month. The egg will hatch after about 54 days. Upon hatching, both parents care for the chick for about 30 to 40 days. At this time the chick will leave the nest and will join the crèche with the other chicks. While the chick is in the crèche, the parents will feed their chick every other day. The parents will continue to care for the chick for approximately 10-13 months. Therefore, a new chick is only born every other year. King Penguins survive mainly on fish and small amounts of squid.
