Class of 2010 reflects
Jillian Stevenson | Staff Writer

The majority of the largest freshmen class ever at Fisher have been pleased with their first year on campus. Many didn’t miss the shorter walk to Basil because they never knew it existed, but they are looking forward to an end to temporary fences and piles of dirt.

Commuter Frank Garcea said that even though the new building doesn’t pertain to him, “the additions will make the campus look awesome, and they’ll be cool for future students.”

Allegra Wright, a Haffey resident, likes the idea of a shorter walk and a gathering place on Lavery Lawn.

“It’ll be really nice when it’s warm to go and hang out there,” she said.

Another freshman commuter, Taryn Smith, wishes more buildings were connected.  “It would be nice to not have to walk through the cold,” she added.

As for walking, several freshmen mentioned adjustments to Security.  Smith said she and a friend were headed up the stairs in the Pharmacy building when they were stopped and questioned by officers in the middle of the day.

“I’m not a pharmacy student, but I am a Fisher student, and that kind of stuff just bothers me,” Smith said.

Both Garcea and Jordan Lavorato, also a commuter, were written up for being in a resident’s room where a bottle of vodka was in the refrigerator.

Lavorato said a more tolerant alcohol policy should be adopted, and thinks the constant threat of “Security knocking on your door because the music’s too loud is ridiculous.”

He said that there isn’t much to do on the weekends. Wright agreed, saying that while events are good, there should be more.

“We should have more concerts, like other schools,” Wright said.

Another issue is the lack of on-campus housing for next year.  Garcea and Lavorato stayed at home for their first year, but were looking forward to a place on campus.  Both are on a waiting list.

Many mentioned adjusting to the college work load, and Ashley Terhaar said she “realized the need to prioritize and organize myself much more effectively than I did in high school…not procrastinating at all was the best path to do all of my work and not be overwhelmed.”

Smith added that she’s busier than she expected. “But I have to go along with it to get through,” she said.
