Cards swept by Ithaca, sweep Elmira

No matter the sport, when Fisher plays the Ithaca Bombers, they have to step up their game. For the softball team it would be no different if they wanted to defeat the reigning Empire 8 champions in the doubleheader held on March 13. However, the Cardinals were unable to hang on as the Bombers, ranked third in the nation, swept them.

Game one remained scoreless until the third inning when Bomber Jenn Marro hit a home run. The Cardinals then allowed four more runs due to errors. The Bombers went on to score two more runs in the third, giving Ithaca a 7-1 lead, before senior Katie Botkins answered with a home run of her own in the bottom of the fourth.

That success was short-lived as Ithaca went on to score three runs in the fifth with Marro’s second home run to win 10-1.

In the second game, Ithaca began the first inning with a run. Fisher tied it up in the third, but Ithaca scored again in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. In the sixth inning a run by Bomber Mel Chinigo ended the game with a score of 3-1.

On April 14, Fisher would face Elmira with much different results in another doubleheader.

In game one, Fisher’s Amanda Vandermark and Sarah Gates would immediately score. The Cardinals then scored one run in both the second and third innings, and four runs in the fourth. Elmira also scored their last run of the game in the fourth making the score 8-2. Fisher scored six more runs, all unanswered, ending the game after the sixth inning with a score of 14-2. Game two would be more of the same. Fisher scored eight runs in six innings shutting out Elmira, 8-0.

The Cardinals will play against D’Youville College and SUNY Geneseo on April 18 and 19, respectively.
