There is a category of music that is getting bigger and bigger in the underground market. It consists of a guitarist or a piano player, and one performer. You can catch most of these performers not on MTV or VH1 but rather on Comedy Central. I’m talking about the musical comedians. People like Stephen Lynch or Demetri Martin. My personal favorite of all the musical comedians would have to be Stephen Lynch. He has numerous albums out but my favorite two are definitely Superhero and A Little Bit Special.
Stephen Lynch isn’t just known for his comedy, he was recently in the broadway musical The Wedding Singer. Stephen Lynch makes his music sound child-friendly but the lyrics are for the mature audience. Songs such as “Superhero” and “A little bit Special” deal with topics that aren’t taught in elementary schools. The lyrics are colorful, catchy and downright hilarious. I wouldn’t suggest this type of music to those who don’t like racy situations. But to anyone else who likes a good laugh and doesn’t mind the few racy comments, than you would find Stephen Lynch as appealing as I do.
Lynch comes from North Michigan. A cult comedy flick This is Spinal Tap inspired Lynch to find his calling to musical Comedy. He then moved to New York City, where so many musicians get their start, to start his career. He hit it big with guest spots on Opie and Anthony after a few club spots. That helped him get a special on Comedy Central and it has all blown up ever since.
Stephen Lynch deals with a variety of subjects and won’t leave any stone unturned. Every song was recorded in front of a live audience with great audiences reaction. Also, look out for Stephen Lynch coming to the area soon. He is currently on tour on the west coast but should be working his way over here soon.
