Do you happen to have a green pen with green ink with you? How about an umbrella or a St. John Fisher lanyard? If you are a member of St. John Fisher’s Commuter Council, you just might have any or all of those things with you as you travel to and from your classes on campus.
Recently, some of Fisher’s commuter students were put to this test during a scavenger hunt at a Commuter Council meeting. Members were divided into groups and challenged to find various items among their belongings, including a picture of their pet, index cards and deodorant. The winners received a free meal ticket, valid in the Bon Appétit Dining Hall or Cyber Café.
Commuter Council aims to represent the needs of Fisher’s commuters to administration and helps to create a unified campus where all students can be a part of and have their social needs met.
The Council’s president this year is senior Thomas Ashman who has been involved with Commuter Council since his freshman year.
“People should get involved with the Council because we are an organization that tries to organize a lot of different events. Commuter Council is not just for commuters, but we focus on them because they tend not to get involved on campus because they feel they are not a part of the campus. So that is our mission, to get them involved, and encourage them to have that college experience that they want,” Ashman said.
Throughout the fall semester Commuter Council has been extremely busy, hosting a series of activities in and around the city of Rochester. These trips have included a Bowling Night at Clover Lanes, an outing to Comix Café and a visit to Fear at Frontier. Commuter Council has also hosted an Appreciation Breakfast and a Recognition Lunch on two separate occasions for Fisher commuters.
A few off-campus events are planned each month, and the Council meets bi-monthly during free period on Thursdays.
“Meetings are a good way to meet other commuters, and there is always free food, and fun activities going on. Meetings are where we announce some of our upcoming events, and of course residents are always welcome,” Ashman said.
Coming up next for Commuter Council is another outing to Clover Lanes on Friday, Dec. 8 beginning at 10 p.m.
Junior Ashley Gray is Commuter Council’s treasurer this year. She has been involved with the Council for all of her three years at St. John Fisher.
“The Bowling Night is a great chance to come out and see friends. It is one of our largest events, and we always have a lot of fun,” Gray said.
The Council is also planning a trip for the spring semester, so be on the look out for a white water rafting trip to take place in early April 2007 although details are not finalized.
“We are hoping for a big turn out of both commuters and residents, and we know it is going to be a great trip,” Ashman said.
