Curious about the posters you have seen up around campus advertising Fisher Olympics?
Fisher Olympics was hosted by Dr. Todd Harrison’s Sports Studies Facility and Operations Management course on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in the Student Life Center. The event drew an estimated 100 people. Student athletes competed in soccer, dodgeball, three-on-three basketball and sports trivia.
“The Fisher Olympics fundraiser went extremely well. The competition was tough and everybody had a lot of fun,” event director, senior Ryan Moran said.
The event itself was a class project that was designed to “help us get a better understanding of planning events from the legal aspect, risk management, and getting volunteers,” Moran said. He volunteered to take on the title of the event director but added, “The class as a whole is doing most of the work.”
There were 16 teams and each team of athletes paid $10 to participate and received a free T-shirt. All of the money went to benefit the Special Olympics.
Overall, the class raised over $1,500 for the Special Olympics, which will be used to improve the lives of those with disabilities. Resident Student Association (RSA), Student Government Association (SGA) and Student Activities Board (SAB) also donated money to help cover the costs of the event. Students from the class gathered donations and sponsorships from local banks and businesses. Speakers Lisa Best and her brother Joe talked in front of the teams to further educate them about the Special Olympics Program.
All facets of the event from planning, to advertising, promotion, and referrals were done by the students. Different groups were organized to plan various portions of the event. Some students were on an organizational committee, while others were responsible for obtaining sponsorships.
Harrison said he would like to thank all the students who participated and the sponsors that helped make this event a huge success. Moran emphasized the point that the event “was a great group effort.”
Spectators were also on hand to cheer on their athletic peers. T-shirts were also sold at the event for $5 to also help raise additional money for the Special Olympics.
