Registration preparation

It’s that time of year again: time to register for classes.

For the seniors, this is the last time. The last time you will meet with your adviser, the last time you will be given an alternate PIN number and the last time you will have to wake up at 8 a.m. on your day off just to assure your seats in the last few classes you need before graduation.

For the freshmen and transfers, it can be a stressful and confusing process at first.

Beginning Nov. 13, students will begin to log in to Fish‘R’Net at their assigned start time and choose their Spring 2007 classes.

Timeslots are the assigned start times for registration. They are used both to control what sequence students register in and the number of students registering at any one time.

Since students who have earned more credits have fewer courses to choose from and fewer courses to meet their degree requirements, they have earlier timeslots. These students are less likely to be closed out of courses that they need to take  for graduation or courses they’re just interested in taking as electives.

Registration activity is a resource-intensive process that controls the number of students assigned to any one timeslot so registration can be processed with minimal delay.

Before you are given your timeslot, you must first meet with your adviser. He or she will guide you in the right direction

“It is important for the students to meet with their advisers so that the student and adviser can talk about course sequencing and plan electives that will benefit the student’s career interests,” Registrar Julie Thomas said.

Scheduling can be a challenge. When you have a choice between a few classes, read the course descriptions and pick what sounds the most interesting to you. Don’t start picking just any class, know your core requirements.

“Complete your core requirements early – don’t wait to take core courses in your senior year. Pick core and elective courses from a variety of disciplines to broaden your knowledge base,” Thomas said.
