Class officers are elected

One hundred forty-two of the nearly 2,500 students on campus voted for their next class officers. The low voter turnout and the lack of opponents turned out in favor of the new class officers for the classes of 2007, 2008 and 2009.
“I feel that it would be more effective and produce a more accurate voter opinion if it were held on more than one day, or if there was an option of voting anonymously online,” said Jessica Karlsen, the new treasurer for the class of 2007. “Some changes to the time allotment would allow more opinions to be cast.”
Despite her recommendations, Karlsen said the voting went smoothly.
“The new election process that they used was great,” she said. “It was very simple, quick and efficient which should have encouraged more students to vote.”
Goals for the Class of 2007 will include preparations for Senior Week and additional fundraising.
“My goals as a class officer include creating a fantastic senior week, in which everyone will be satisfied with their final memories here at Fisher,” said Karlsen. “I would also like to get the class more involved in the fundraisers that we do, so that everyone feels as if they contributed something.”
Karlsen knows she will face challenges as she assumes  new position as class president.
“The hardest part of being a class officer is adhering to everyone's wants and needs,” she said. “I will try my best to hear everyone's opinion and incorporate it into our senior year.”
Kylie Black, newly elected secretary for the current freshman class, feels speeches and campaigns would have made the election better.
“I kind of feel like we should have had to give speeches and campaign anyway, even though no one ran against us,” Black said. “No one in the class knows what we’re about or what we hope to accomplish since they didn’t get any input from any of us.”
For the class of 2007, Senior Week and Commencement will be the biggest tasks to tackle. For the current freshmen, it’s trying to make their mark on campus.
“The primary task of senior class officers is to plan a senior week, and graduation,” said Karlsen. “My main goal is to work with my fellow classmates to plan a memorable ending to our years at Fisher, with regards to those two events.”
Working with fellow officers for fundraising events was Karlsen’s main concern. Allotting more funds will make planning events like Commencement and Senior Week easier at the end of the year.
As representatives for their respective classes, working together is necessary.

“[We want to try] to listen to everyone’s ideas and make things happen,” said Black. “We have a big class and trying to make everyone happy will be difficult.”
