Brighton Fire Department to house students
Beginning in the fall 2006 semester, the Brighton Fire Department will begin a new program called “The Bunker Program,” a concept that has proven beneficial in many other college towns including University of Maryland and Oklahoma State University.
According to Brighton Fire Department Captain Aaron Hiller, “It is a great way for student firefighters to serve their local communities while having a ‘traditional college experience’ as well as keeping their skills sharp.”
This 12-month housing option will allow four students, who attend local Rochester area colleges and who are active fire volunteers and have completed the New York State Firefighter I class or Firefighting Essentials, to live for free on the firehouse grounds.
All live-ins must be matriculated, full-time students in an area college, and be at least 18 years of age, or have the consent of a parent or guardian.
Most amenities are included and range from high-speed internet, cable TV to share, a phone, as well as access to laundry facilities at no cost and a common kitchen with all cookware needs.
All of this is given to the student if he or she commits 20 to 25 hours of service each week.
Hiller adds that students’ schedules allow shifts to be manned that might be difficult for other volunteers to work.
“After recognizing the success of similar programs around the country, we thought it was a great way to have additional trained firefighters available for emergencies in the community,” he said.
“And, because students have a little more flexibility in their schedule, they can help fill the staffing gaps where needed most.”
The house for the students is still under construction.
Informational sessions and the formal application process will begin during the second week of May.
The application process will be similar to applying for any position. The interested party must attach a letter of recommendation from his or her hometown Fire Chief along with their application.
Interested students should visit the Bunker Program’s website at http://www.brightonfd.org/ bunker.asp or contact Captain Hiller directly at ahiller@brightonfd.org.
