Diaby crowned Mr. Fisher
A large, cheering and enthused crowed filled Basil 135 for St. John Fisher College’s annual “Mr. Fisher” event, sponsored by the Resident Student Association (RSA), on Thursday, April 6.
Three judges determined which of the three candidates would win: Katie Dayton, the resident director of Murphy Hall; Jim Liebow, the general manager of Bon Appétit; and Heather Schoff the president of the Student Activities Board (SAB).
The event started off with an introduction of the three candidates – junior Jon Howard and freshmen Prince Diaby and Justin Muzzi.
Part one of the show was “Casual Wear,” and Howard went first, followed by Diaby and Muzzi. Each of the three individuals talked briefly about themselves before Liebow asked Howard what he would do with the title. Howard jokingly said that he would “sell it [the Mr. Fisher title] on eBay” and post it on Facebook.
Muzzi described himself as “loud and talkative.” He was asked which person, dead or alive, would he like to meet the most. He was also asked by the judges the best joke he tells.
“I don’t really tell jokes,” he said. “I just make fun of people’s moms a lot. I have good timing.”
Part two of the show was women’s wear, where each of the contestants wore a dress.
Part two was followed by the Escort Challenge, hosted by Brad Huber, president of Circle K.
The winner of this challenge got to send his money to any charity of his choice. The winner was Prince’s escort, freshman Erica Flores, and the money went to a charity for underprivileged children.
Part three of the show was “Men’s Formal.” The contestants had to dress in formal male clothing, such as tuxedos.
In part four of the show, the contestants had to demonstrate any talents that they had.
Howard went first; he wrote a song called “Mr. Fisher Blues” and played his harmonica.
Diaby sang “A Little More Time On You” by N’Sync and also danced to a vast array of songs, from “Pink Panther” to break dancing. Muzzi performed the dance from the movie Napoleon Dynamite.
In a last-ditch effort to claim the title of Mr. Fisher, each contestant went in front of the judges and said why he felt that he deserved it. In the end, Howard came in third place, Muzzi in second and Diaby received the crown.
Audience members said they enjoyed the show.
“It was a lot of fun,” said sophomore Amy Reed. “It’s a good time for people to come out and meet new students.”
Reed said her favorite part of the show was Talents.
“It was interesting. They’re all talented,” she said.
“My favorite part of the show was Talent because Prince is a really good dancer,” said junior Bridgette Jones. “It was good and fun to watch.”
Jones said she really enjoyed the show.
“Overall I liked it. It went smoothly,” she said. “The Escort Challenge was new, and I liked it.”
“This took a month’s worth of planning and a lot of work,” said Megan Fretto, RSA’s general programmer. “The turnout was great. People were cheering and yelling. The contestants were excited about the whole thing.”
Fretto said there were things she would like to see changed to next year’s Mr. Fisher contest.
“Our goals are to have a bigger turnout, more contestants and crazier talents,” she said.
“The Mr. Fisher event is bigger than it is now,” said Howard. “You can make a fool of yourself and have a good time.”
His favorite part of the show was Talent.
“It gave me a chance to show creativity by singing and playing an original song,” he said. He said he is doing the Mr. Fisher event again next year.
“As a freshman, I really got involved in a lot of activities,” said Diaby, a native of the Bronx, who is majoring in nursing. “Running for Mr. Fisher would be a way for me to reward myself.”
“It was all worth it,” said Diaby. “I would give other people a chance to win to make it fair because I believe that there are a lot of Mr. Fishers out there and this is a good way to make a difference.”
