Fuller, Stackus propel Fisher to second place

With the NCAA tournament clearly in its sights, the St. John Fisher golf team has picked a great time to come up big in the clutch.
After coming in sixth at the McDaniel Invitational in Gettysburg on April 1 and 2, the Cardinals finished in a three-way tie for second place at the Mid-Atlantic Regional on April 9 and 10.
Fisher was led once again by the senior duo of Zach Fuller and Mike Stackus in the McDaniel Invitational.
Fuller tied for first place overall, posting a 145 (75-70) over two rounds, while Stackus finished tied for fourth place with a 151 (76-75).
The team then traveled to Hershey, Pa. for the Mid-Atlantic Regional needing to finish in the top two in order to remain in contention for Nationals.
“That tournament was huge for us,” said Fuller.  “We went down there and did what we had to do.  It was a complete team effort.”
Allegheny College, the No. 15 in the country, won the event with a total team score of 619.  Fisher tied the University of Rochester and Washington & Jefferson for second place.
Needing to play the final four holes of the tournament at better than three-over par, the Cardinals came up big when it mattered the most.
Fuller finished the tournament tied for fifth place overall after shooting a 152 (76-76), with Stackus carding a 159 (78-81) to finish in 14th place.
Junior Dave DeLary also played well for the Cardinals, posting a 161 (81-80) to finish in 22nd place.
Nick Velasco shot a 165, including a 79 in the final round to help Fisher secure its second-place finish.  T.J. Mayberry shot a 177 for the tournament.
“This was big for us because we now have some confidence going into the last few tournaments,” said Fuller.
Fisher now has to beat Rochester in its next tournament.  From there, a committee will decide who advances to Nationals.
“We’ve put ourselves in a good position to get to Nationals with the last tournament,” Fuller said.
Fisher was forced to pull out of the Carnegie Mellon tournament in Pittsburgh, played April 14 and 15, due to scheduling issues.
