Fisher belts ten homers in week

Strong hitting and excellent defense helped pace the softball team to a 6-2 record last week, making them 22-8 overall and 7-3 in the Empire 8 Conference.
“We really hit well over the week,” said senior outfielder Mary Kate Maurer.  “That’s what helped us to do so well against our opponents.  We also played well defensively over the week.”
Maurer and junior shortstop Katie Botkins lead the team with four home runs each this season, with each hitting three homers in their games last week.
Fisher finished the week strong by going 3-1 against SUNYAC teams Brockport and Oswego.
Fisher defeated SUNY Brockport twice, winning the first game 6-3 and earning a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
Botkins and sophomore Sara Dresser each started the first game off by hitting solo home runs for the Cardinals, while senior Amanda Novitske went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Senior pitcher Amanda Herberger finished with nine strikeouts, bringing her career total to 662, which makes her the 13th all-time in NCAA Division III.
In the second game, freshman Amanda Shevchuk earned the win on the mound, and Maurer picked up her fourth home run of the season.
The Cardinals split double headers with both Oswego and Alfred earlier in the week.
Against Oswego the Cardinals won the first game 5-0, behind strong pitching from Herberger, but lost the second game 5-3 in eight innings.
In the second game, freshmen Ashlee Krause and Amanda Vandermark hit well for the Cardinals, each hitting a solo home run, and combining for four of Fisher’s five hits.
Against Alfred, the Cardinals won the first game 8-0 with Maurer and junior catcher Kim Barry leading the team.  Maurer recorded another homerun, while Barry finished 3-for-4, finishing with a career high four RBIs.
The Cardinals dropped the second game 4-0 to the Saxons.
In their only road games of the week, Fisher swept host RIT, winning the first 10-0 and the second 4-1.
Both Maurer and Botkins hit home runs in game one.  Botkins finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Maurer finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, freshman Kristi Bradley’s two-run double in the first inning gave the Cardinals the lead for good.  Novitske finished the game hitting strong with a two-run homer.
“We really came out and hit the ball well in these games,” said Herberger.  “We finished these eight games with ten home runs in five days, with homers coming from six different players.  We need to keep up the effort as we finish up the season.”
