Women rally past foes

The St. John Fisher women’s lacrosse team is now ranked second in the Empire 8 conference after winning three straight games to improve their record to 6-4 overall.
“You know how people say you can talk the talk but can you walk the walk? Well before we used to talk, and now we are getting the walk down,” said sophomore Laurie Quackenbush. “Every year, every day, and every game we are getting better.”
“We’ve come so far these past months,” freshman Jen Springett said. “We’ve put so much into our game, and we’ve had some awesome wins lately.”
Most recently, the Cardinals held off a late rally from Elmira to score a 10-9 win at Growney Stadium on April 15. Junior Haley Koperski led the Cardinals with three goals, while sophomores Carla Jemison and Katie Glavin had two each. Goals were also scored by Quackenbush, Springett, and senior Erica Lilly. Freshman goalie Danielle Murphy made five saves.
The day before, the Cardinals hosted Ithaca College and played to a 12-11 win. It was the first victory over Ithaca in program history.
“Five years ago when I first coached here, we lost by fifteen or so goals,” said head coach Shannon McHale. “This shows that our program is on the rise and solidifies that we are a talented team with a ton of potential.”
Junior Theresa Nobilski scored four goals, with Jemison, Koperski, Springett, and senior Erin Wightman scoring two each. Lilly, junior Caitlin Navor, and junior Ramona Walters also scored. Murphy made seven saves.
On April 8, the Cardinals visited Hartwick and won 11-9. They trailed 6-4 after the first period, but scored the first four goals of the second period to take the lead for good. Quackenbush and Nobilski each had three goals, with points also being scored by Jemison, Navor, Lilly, Springett, and freshman Molly Rothfuss. Murphy made five saves.
The day before, Fisher had fallen to Utica College, losing 7-6. “We played very well the first half but did not shoot well,” Coach McHale said. “The second half we played flat.”
Springett made five goals for the Cardinals and Glavin also scored. Murphy made three saves.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, McHale said, “We have a tough schedule remaining, so we have to stay focused. This is a solid group of women who are very talented and determined. I feel that we have a great shot at making the NCAA tourney.”
