Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor:

There is an often quoted fable entitled “the Miller, the Son, and the Donkey” by Aesop.  The proverb states that “you can please some of the people, some of the time, but you can't please all of the people, all of the time.”  Even after 2,500 years it still stands true to this day. In a recent editorial of the Cardinal Courier accusations were made that the Spring Event Committee has done a poor job in reflecting students’ interests. The editorial charged that the committee did not offer enough opportunity for students to voice their opinions, the committee did not start planning the event early enough in the year, and the committee was too heavily influenced by the Student Activities Board. This year the committee has offered more chances than ever before for student input. Not only did we distribute surveys in the Campus Center during dining hours, we also held the first ever Campus Center Student Forum in addition to conducting an online survey. The committee starts planning the event in October, which provides ample time to plan an event of this size. This year marks the sixth year that Spring Event has been a separate entity from SAB, thereby cutting off ties and influence from the organization. We agree with Aesop that you can’t please everyone, but Spring Event has done more than enough to ensure the most popular act possible for Fisher. Aside from student demands we are subject to a budget, an agent, a date, and conditions of the act. It is unfair for anyone to criticize our efforts if they have not taken the time to first learn the facts. Spring Event is open to everyone’s comments and concerns, but we do not take lightly to assumptions that are based on misinformation. The moral of this story is, "He who criticizes most, oft knows the least.”

Sincerely,

Bradley Huber
