The Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley's 2006-2007 Higher Education Series
St. John Fisher College

LGBT 101---An Introduction to Queer Diversity

The audience will be provided with a general overview of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender diversity. A clear distinction will be made between the “categories” of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Commonly held stereotypes about lgbt people will be discussed and myths will be debunked. In order for this presentation to be of maximum value for classes, professors should ask students to submit at least one question in advance of the classroom discussion.

Queer Factor: Homophobia and Transphobia

This presentation will provide the audience with an opportunity to examine their comfort level with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons in a safe, non-judgmental environment.  The Attitudes Toward Difference survey developed by Dorothy Riddle will be used as the platform for a lively interactive discussion about the importance of moving from a place of tolerance to one of acceptance of persons of differing sexual orientations and gender expressions. Practical suggestions will be offered on ways of being an advocate for the lgbt community in one's own personal sphere of influence. (For classes): professors are strongly encouraged to solicit questions from their students in advance.

Marriage Mania

Same-sex couples can get legally married in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, and soon will receive full recognition in South Africa. The United Kingdom grants all spousal rights and responsibilities to couples who are registered as civil partners. Over a dozen other countries grant rights and domestic partner protections which, while more limited than marriage, do recognize same-sex couples for the purpose of immigration. On the other hand, the United States remains embroiled in a battle over the right of same gender individuals and their families to receive legal recognition of their relationships. Same-sex couples are denied over 1100 federal rights and protections as well as hundreds of state benefits than can only be acquired through civil marriage.

Why has this issue become such a divisive one among the American pubic? How are proponents of social justice addressing the backlash resulting from the favorable Massachusetts’s decision in 2003?  Will marriage discrimination end?

This presentation aims to create a context for understanding the progression of the gay civil rights movement by comparing it with the fights for racial equality and women’s rights. Dialogue will be encouraged to allow for a variety of viewpoints to be expressed on this controversial topic.

Series Coordinator: Jeanne Gainsburg, Outreach Coordinator for the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley.
Important Note: Guest speakers from the Gay Alliance who are invited to deliver the above presentations will, upon request and with sufficient notice, tailor the subject matter to the specific needs of the class, department, staff, or student organization. Only one session per class, organization, or department please.  Sessions can be scheduled from September, 2006 through April, 2007 depending upon speaker availability. Six SJFC classroom, student organization, or staff sessions are available free of charge on a first come, first served basis. To schedule a session, please contact Multicultural Affairs & Diversity Programs via Goldie Ross at gdross@sjfc.edu; 585-385-8378. If a slot is available, you will be directed to Jeanne Gainsburg the series’ coordinator to schedule the date, time, and details for the selected session.
