12/03/05 - Fisher @ Hobart

CARDINALS END FIRST HALF OF SEASON AT 4-4

Geneva, NY, December 3, 2005 - The St John Fisher College Club Ice Hockey Team ended the first half of the 2005-2006 season with an overall record of 4-4.  Despite missing 9 regular players due to injuries, the short-handed Cardinals headed to Geneva Saturday for a late night match with the Hobart Statesmen.  Fisher began the game with only 3 defensemen and 6 forwards.

The Cardinals came out strong and the game was even for the first ten minutes.  Senior forward Paul Marfione was lost for the game with an injury and there just weren’t enough skaters to keep the game competitive.  Hobart jumped on the depleted Cardinals and eventually defeated Fisher 12-3.

The score of the game was not indicative of the effort given by the Fisher players.  The ice time logged by each player was enormous.  The Cardinals did not quit and played hard right up to the end.  The coaching staff was extremely proud of the effort given.

The injury problem has been season-long, as Fisher has lost 36 man-games to injury.  The Cardinals hope to get all of the injured players back by the time the second half of the season begins in January.

For the game, Fisher got goals from Ray Arnold, Matt Selover and Jason Greenway.  Adding assists for the Cardinals were Warren Kosel, Tim Storie, Don Nenno, Mike Gala and Arnold.

For the season Warren Kosel, Tim Storie and Matt Selover lead the team with 6 goals apiece.  Ray Arnold leads with 12 assists.  Overall, Arnold has 14 points, followed by Warren Kosel with 11 and Matt Selover and Tim Storie with 10 each.  Jay Greenway leads the team in power-play goals with 3 and Ray Arnold has 5 power-play assists.

The team is off until January 20 when they head to Olean to face St Bonaventure.  Fisher beat the Bonnies earlier in the season.  The next home game is a rematch with Hobart on January 27 at Genesee Valley Ice Arena.  That is a 10:00 PM start time.

11/19/05 - Fisher @ Morrisville

Morrisville , NY, November 19, 2005 - The St John Fisher Cardinals traveled to Morrisville for a NYCHL match-up.  Due to several injuries to key players, the Cardinals were forced to rearrange the lineup and play with only two forward lines and 2 natural defensemen.  The Broncos took advantage of this early on as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first period.  But the Cardinals settled down and tied the game at 4-4 by the end of the first.

In the second period, the Cardinals jumped on the Broncos and took the game over scoring six goals in the period to take a 10-5 lead into the intermission.  Freshman Tim Storie, despite playing with a broken thumb, scored three goals, including a short handed tally to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead.  Warren Kosel also scored three times while Paul Marfione and Chris Rodriguez chipped in two goals apiece.  Matt Selover, Ryan Greenway, Mike Gala and Jay Greenway, playing in his first game since suffering a knee injury in the season opener, all scored once.

The third period was a little chippy as the frustrated Hawks tried to goad the Cardinals into penalties.  Fisher kept their composure and pulled away for a 14-5 victory.  The win improves Fisher’s record to 3-1 in the NYCHL and 4-3 overall.  Fisher’s next game is December 3 at Hobart .

10/22/05 - St. Bonaventure @ Fisher

Rochester , NY , October 22, 2005- Just one day after a disappointing loss to the University of Rochester, the Cardinals took the ice at the Skating Institute of Rochester (SIR), hosting the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.

The Cardinals started quickly with defenseman Matt Selover blasting his third goal of the season from the point to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.  Freshman center Tim Storrie scored the first of his two goals on the night tipping in a powerplay goal off a shot from Tyler Wichmann.

In the second period, the Bonnies rebounded and tied the game at 2-2 with two quick goals.  Fisher maintained their composure and took a 3-2 lead as Warren Kosel whipped a quick wrist shot over the St. Bonaventure goalie to give the Cardinals another powerplay goal.  St. Bonaventure tied the game and then took a 4-3 lead going into the final period.

In the third period, Storrie evened the score at 4-4.  St. Bonaventure again took a one goal lead mid-way through the period.  With three minutes left in the game, Ray Arnold broke in down the left side and fed a perfect pass to Paul Marfione, who finished the play with his first goal of the season and a 5-5 tie.  The score remained tied as time expired and the game headed into overtime.

In the overtime, Fisher enjoyed a 4-on-3 advantage and used the powerplay to get the victory.  Ray Arnold fed a cross-ice pass to senior captian Ryan Greenway who made no mistake in burying his second goal of the season.  The game winner came just 30 seconds into the extra time.

For the season, Bob Craig played solid in net to record his second win,  Matt Selover has scored a goal in each of his three games, and Don Nenno has recorded one assist in each of his first three games.  For the game, senior goaltender Bob Craig was awarded the 3rd star,  Ryan Greenway was awarded 2nd star, and the 1st star was awarded to Ray Arnold for his four assist effort.  Arnold set up both the tying and game winning goals.  Fisher is now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the NYCHL league.

Fisher’s next game is Saturday, October 29 when the Cardinals travel to Oswego for a NYCHL matchup.

10/21/05 - Fisher @ University of Rochester

by Seth Pohorence, Team Publicist

Pittsford , NY , October 21, 2005 – The St. John Fisher Cardinals were trying to open up the season 2 and 0 but felt the wrath of Fisher’s cross town rival and rink rival, University of Rochester.  Rochester did not let up the whole game, swamping the redbirds 11-2.

Fisher’s two goals came off of power plays.  Freshman, Matt Selover is starting off his career in a Fisher sweater promising, scoring 15:03 in the first period.  Selover scored a goal in last week’s game.  Jeff Colegrove picked up the other tally for the Cardinals, scoring his power play goal early in the third period.

Apart from those two scoreboard highlights, Fisher was just outmanned.  Rochester shot the roof off, 46 shots to 13 for the whole game.  The Cardinals surrendered two shorthanded goals and 4 power play goals.  Fisher had the most trouble with Rochester ’s Dan Thomas and Dimitros Kokkinis who scored four goals each.

Fisher hopes to put together a win against St. Bonaventure tomorrow at the Skating Institute of Rochester.
