SHRM Certification
The Graduate Human Resource Development Program
offers the
2002 Official SHRM Learning System
College/University Program
Prepare for the PHR or SPHR Certification Examination
through the Graduate Human Resource Development Weekend College Program.
Background
Human Resource Certification is the symbol of professional achievement. Beyond experience and education, the Professional in Human Resource Certification (PHR) and the Senior Professional in Human Resource Certification (SPHR) designation signifies that Human Resource (HR) professionals have mastered the HR body of knowledge. This designation is awarded to HR professionals by the HRCI after they have successfully passed a written comprehensive examination. It is the most significant and recognized non-degree credential for HR professionals.
The HRCI maintains the nationally recognized standards set by individuals working in the profession. HRCI is the HR credentialing body founded to promote the establishment of standards for the profession and passing of a written comprehensive examination the Institute's requirements for mastering the codified body of knowledge.
Examination Eligibility
To be eligible to take either the PHR or the SPHR examination, candidates must have employment experience in the HR field as (1) HR Practitioners; (2) HR Educators; (3) HR Researchers; or (4) HR consultants. Without the required employment experience, a Student/Recent Graduate category of eligibility is offered to students to take during the twelve months prior to graduation but not later than one year after graduation. These candidates may take the examination to acquire contingent PHR status. Student/Recent Graduate candidates have five years after passing the examination to secure the required HR experience. Once they have met and documented the minimum work experience requirements, they will be awarded the certification.
Recertification Recertification is required every three years either by examination or by participating in sixty contact hours of updating HR knowledge. These contact hours may be obtained through additional HR related coursework, seminars, or workshops. As an extension of this course, non-credit classes and workshops to assist HR professionals with recertification requirements and preparation will be offered.
