April is Math Awareness Month at Fisher
Math Awareness Month (MAM) is a celebration of mathematics, inspired by the Mathematical
Association of America for the purpose of increasing public and academic awareness of the
role of mathematics in society. The celebration usually includes a series of talks and
activities for the general public. Here at St. John Fisher, the talks are intended to be
understood by undergraduate and graduate students and interested members of the Faculty and Staff.
More information about MAM are provided at the
MAM08 website.

2008 SCHEDULE:
“Muddled Math: Mistakes That Mattered”
Thursday, April 10th Presenter: Dr. Heather A. Lewis Pioch C-106 Nazareth
College
12:30 – 1:30
Abstract: Everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes it doesn’t matter beyond a lost
point on an exam, but other times it can make the news headlines. In this talk
I’ll describe several real-life situations in which mathematical errors (and
sometimes very simple ones at that) have had significant and public
consequences.
“You’re right to vote, but how?”
Friday, April 18th Presenter: Dr. Kris Green Pioch C-106 St. John Fisher
College
1:25 – 2:20
Abstract: In today’s world, we seem to vote constantly. Some votes are
trivial – like where the group wants to go for dinner; some are more weighty –
like choosing the next reality TV winner; some are downright critical – like
electing senators. Would it surprise you to learn that there are many different
mechanisms for allowing a group to vote on a decision? Not only are there many
different ways to count votes, they are not the same, and they often give
conflicting results! Even worse, mathematics has shown that there is no such
thing as a “perfect” voting system, free from all problems, even without
corruption or accidents entering into the process. In this talk we’ll explore
some examples of voting conundrums and try to understand why the Mathematical
Association of America chose “Math and Voting” as the theme of this year’s
Mathematics Awareness Month.
Academic Clubs
