March Madness 3 on 3 Basketball: This event was held on Friday, March 14th, 2008 as a part of a Gambling Awareness Campaign.  Approximately 25 teams (over a 100 students) participated in the event.  The winners were Kyle Cerio, Tim Coyne, Mike McKeever, Adrion Fenyn, and Isaiah Smalt.  This was the third annual March Madness Basketball Tournament that the SAMs have run.

Dodgeball Tournament:  On December 7th, 2007 the SAMs (Student Athlete Mentors) hosted a dodgeball tournament during stress free week in the SLC.  The event was very successful with a turn out of over 125 students and faculty.  John Zinni called the action as the winning team was Karl Schiefer, Matt Ernst, Ryan Parker, Jacob VanBuren, Kyle Stanbro, and Joe Cummings.  This was the first annual SAMs Dodgeball tournament.

Freshman Seminar:  Throughout the months of September-December, Freshman Seminar classes began. Using the Social Norms approach, the Snowball Survey was administered in each class.  Results from the survey consistently show that 34 % of freshman students do not drink alcohol.  Throughout these seminars, SAMs (Student Athlete Mentors) co-facilitated the classes focusing on Social Norms and underage drinking along with alcohol prevention.  They play jeopardy with the students pointing out certain things that are perceived to be true about drugs and alcohol.

Wellness Fair:  In September the Colleges annual Health Fair is held for students, faculty and staff.  A long list of organizations which includes the local AA Sheriff’s Department, New York State Troopers, Shear Ego, Wegmans, and SAMs are invited to set up a display at the event.  Social Norms messages regarding underage drinking, and driving while intoxicated were displayed by the SAMs throughout the event through various materials such as posters, bookmarks, videos, surveys, etc.  Over 500 students, faculty and staff attend this event every year.

Taste of Relaxation Toward the end of the 1st semester, before Final Exam Week, the Wellness Center along with SAMs hosted Taste of Relaxation.  This event was another “outlet” for students to come in and relax, enjoy free food and music by the fireplace and learn more about misconceptions with alcohol abuse within the college setting.  Over 200 students attended this event.

Love or Lust This event was held in February with a Valentine’s Day Theme.  This event was held during Sexual Health Week and focused on making healthy lifestyle choices, and social norms.

Kick-Off Event-March Madness This event was a 3V3 Basketball Tournament held on March 23rd in the gym here on campus.  The purpose of this event was to enlighten students of alternatives to drinking on a Friday Night.  The event had a successful turnout with approximately 25 teams entered to play.  Around 100 students attended the competition.  Prior to this event, the SAMs held a media campaign promoting Underage Drinking: Not a Minor Problem.  Informative posters provided by OASAS were displayed campus wide along with hand crafted posters regarding the tournament.  A Focus Group Saturation Survey was administered during this event.  The event will continue to be held annually.

Alcohol Awareness Day This day gave the SAMs an opportunity to post table tents throughout both dining halls on campus relating to alcohol abuse and Social Norms statistics.  Charts, facts and diagrams were included on the table tents.  The Wellness Center also created an informative bulleting board for students which also included Social Norms information along with interesting facts on alcohol use and abuse.  The SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) also administered the Alcohol Screening Survey (AUDIT).  Students taking the survey that scored high are referred to the Wellness Center for follow-up.
