In the fall of 2003 the Wellness Center and the athletic department received an NCAA, choices for a healthy campus grant. The director of the wellness center, the assistant athletic director, and an assistant football coach are the programs developers. The team developed a Student Athlete Mentor Program (SAMs) and collaborated with the Peer Leadership Program to team teach the Freshman Seminar class on Alcohol. The emphasis of the class focuses on the understanding that college students face many choices on a daily basis and the decisions they make may have a lasting effect on their lives.  Since then SAMs has hosted numerous other events on campus and continues to work with Freshman Seminar classes every year.  The group keeps growing every year and since 2005 SAMs has doubled in size.  Advisors have been the backbone for the group and they make it possible for the SAMs to do what they do.  Maureen Niche, the director of the Wellness Center, Jill McCabe, Associate Athletic Director and Women's Soccer Head Coach, and Paul Vosburgh, Head Football coach have all dedicated time and effort into making the group what it is today.  Our newest advisor is Peter Sasso who is a graduate intern with the office of Campus life.  Today we have 29 members and 4 advisors.
